UNMC Today: Cycling Team Studies Chocolate Milk
Press
Chocolate milk might be a strong alternative to commercial sports drinks when it comes to helping athletes recover from strenuous, energy-depleting exercise. Those were the findings of some scientific -- and not-so-scientific -- research of chocolate milk when compared to commercial sports beverages.

Chocolate Milk May Aid After Exercise

By Julie Anderson, Omaha World-Herald Staff Writer

Milk - chocolate milk - may do a body good not just in building strong bones and teeth but also in recharging muscles exhausted by strenuous exercise.

A recent study by Indiana University researchers indicated that cyclists who chugged chocolate milk during a break between workouts outperformed those who drank a commercial sports recovery drink with carbohydrates and protein intended to refuel the body. They also outperformed those who drank a fluid-replenishing drink.

Locally, Roberts Dairy decided to put chocolate milk to the test in its own nonscientific study. The company supplied seven members of Team Kaos, an Omaha-based amateur bicycle racing team, with a week's supply of its Vitamin D Whole Chocolate Milk in 16-ounce bottles.

Healthy Commute
By Sean McCarthy, The Reader newspaper

Estimates from the 2004 U.S. Census reported 81 percent of Omahans commute to work alone. The average commute time in Omaha is about 18 minutes. Fewer than two percent reported traveling to work in a mode other than a car, such as a bicycle.

That figure may change if fuel prices continue to fluctuate. In the past two weeks, employees at The Bike Way at 15115 Industrial Road (thebikeway.com) and Bike Masters at 5265 N. 129th St. (bikemastersomaha.com) said people have cited the rising fuel prices as one of the reasons to buy a new bike.

Joe McWilliams Mug

BY JOHN MARTIN FEY
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

At age 37, Joe McWilliams realizes he's not a pup anymore when it comes to competitive cycling. Younger cyclists might not agree. Joe McWilliams became a road racer after watching the Tour de France on television.  McWilliams of Lincoln is considered perhaps Nebraska's top road racer. And, like many who took up the sport, he was inspired by following the Tour de France.
