Bend, Ore. – Team Kaos’ Ian Gray finished 23rd and Matt Landen was 53rd on the opening stage of the Bend Memorial Clinic Cascade Cycling Classic Wednesday.
The pair completed the 91.2-mile Ironhorse-Brooks Resources Prineville Road Race within two minutes of stage winner Ricardo Escuela (Successfulliving.com presented by ParkPre). Gray finished one minute and 20 seconds behind with a group of nine riders that also included former Team Kaos rider Jarred Berger (Team Einstein’s Cycling). Landen rolled across the finish line at the summit of Pilot Butte in a group of five riders who were 1:57 behind.
“It was actually surprising how comfortable the first day was,” Gray said. “Despite the final 1.2-mile uphill finish, there was only one climb and while the field separated a bit, it came back together.”

The red, white and black jerseys of Team Kaos are popping up in the peloton on the West Coast as some one of the nation's most prestigious stage races approaches.
Team Kaos' Tim Farnham (right) competed at the Infineon Raceway Cougar Mountain Classic Circuit Race Sunday. Although he did not finish the 120-minute race, Farnham hung tough in the fast-paced race that featured some top professionals from Successfulliving.com, BMC Racing, Priority Health and Toyota-United.
Meanwhile, Ian Gray and Matt Landen are in Oregon, preparing for this week's Bend Memorial Clinic Cascade Classic. It is the longest consecutively run elite stage race in the country and has attracted most of North America's top cyclists and teams over the years. The race also has ties to the Midwest with the late Sue Hefle of Lincoln and Team Kaos Public Relations Director Sean Weide of Omaha having previously served as chief judges for the race in 1997 and 2004, respectively.
For Gray, it will be the second time he has tackled the five-day, six-stage event. As a Cat. III last year, the Lincolnite finished seventh overall in what he refers to as a "rude awakening" in his first race in that category.
This will be the first time Gray and Landen have competed in a stage race with professionals.
"It's going to be fast, fast, fast," Gray said as he sat in a coffee
shop in Eugene, Ore., Monday morning. "Since we are going to be
unknown, we can sit in the peloton and do no work. Of course, that
statement provokes a thought that we actually have the ability to do
the work with these guys."

Beatrice, Neb. - Morgan Chaffin (Women’s I-II-III), Joe McWilliams (Men’s Pro-I-II) and David Rogers (Masters Men 45+/Cat. III-IV) were crowned overall omnium champions Monday at the second annual Monumental Memorial Cycling Weekend.
McWilliams (pictured at right0 captured the final stage, the Industrial Row Criterium, over Jay Thomas (Midwest Cycling Community) to narrowly take the overall title from teammate Tim Farnham, who won Saturday’s Gage County road race. Team Kaos swept the podium with Mark Merritt’s third place, while a fourth Team Kaos rider – Marco Vasquez – finished fourth after winning Sunday’s Old West Trail Time Trial.
Chaffin improved on her second place overall in this race a year ago by sweeping all three stages. The Norfolk native was racing for the first time since a crash at the Joe Martin Stage Race.
Rogers won his title over teammate Jordan Brasch by winning the road race and time trial and finishing second in the criterium. Team Kaos teammate Jon Vondracek was first in the criterium (and second overall in the Cat. IV race) while Brasch finished third.
