Team Kaos Helps Celebrate National Bike Month in May Print E-mail

BikeDid you know May is "National Bike Month?"

Team Kaos is doing its part to help promote Bike-to-Work Week (May 14-18) and Bike-to-Work Day (May 18) by participating in both events again this year.

Bike-To-Work Day with Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey takes place on May 14 at 8 a.m. in downtown Omaha. More details will be posted on Team Kaos' website in advance of the event.

Bike-to-Work Week is your chance to help stay in shape without having to set aside additional time for exercise. Bicycle commuters tend to enjoy healthier lifestyles, get sick less often, and feel less stress.

Bicycle commuting is also one of the least expensive ways to get to work. There’s no gas, maintenance, parking fees, or insurance to pay for. Plus, bicycles don’t pollute the air or require lots of land for roads or parking lots. Eight to 12 bicycles can park in the space required for one car.

Registration is underway for the Nebraska Medical Center's Life-A-Thon event on May 19th at Wehrspann Lake at the Chalco Hills Recreation Area.

The Nebraska Medical Center is one of Team Kaos' primary sponsors and annually puts on the event to raise awareness about the lifesaving gift of organ and tissue donations.

Team Kaos proudly participates in the event, which features a bicycle ride, a competitive 10 kilometer run, as well as rollerblading and walking around the lake. In addition to those activities, there will also be a pancake feed, face painting, pony rides, clowns and a petting zoo.

Participation costs $17 for adults and $9 for children 12 years and younger. A t-shirt and finishing prize is included in the cost. To register, call (402) 559-9566.

Team Kaos will once again be a part of the Omaha Police Department's Southeast Precinct community event.

This year's "Safe Neighborhood Fair" is scheduled for Sunday, June 10, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Columbus Park at 24th & Woolworth Avenue. Children and parents are invited to attend and learn about safety and good health.

Members of Team Kaos will conduct a bicycle safety inspection and bicycle maintenance, as well as guide children through a bicycle safety course. Participants will also have a chance to register to win a bicycle.

"It is events such as these that we take pride in participating in as much as we do when we win races," Team Kaos spokesman Sean Weide said. "By being able to make contact with a large number of children at one time, we know we can make a difference when it comes to teaching the importance of wearing a helmet and following the rules of the road."

Team Kaos is available to put on bicycle safety clinics in elementary and preschool settings. To schedule a clinic, contact Weide at (402) 551-5124.

Support LB 564 - Your Next Race May Depend On It Print E-mail

While this site is generally not a forum for political causes, there currently are two bills working their way through the Nebraska Unicameral that deserve the attention of cyclists. The bills, LB 78 and LB 564, have the potential to impact every type of cycling in the state of Nebraska.

In September 2006, the Nebraska Supreme Court ruled in Bronson v. Dawes County that governmental entities were not entitled to protection from litigation under the Nebraska Recreational Liability Act. Under Nebraska law prior to that ruling, a city or county could not be sued if someone was injured on public property while engaged in a recreational activity unless some gross negligence on the part of the city or county was found.
