We went to bed Saturday night not knowing exactly where we would be racing, how far we would race and what the terrain might be, since city officials were insistent that the race not tie up traffic in San Juan again.
Originally scheduled for a start in Bayamon, the route was to have gone to San Juan and finished with 20 circuits. Instead, we bused to a mall where we were given instructions to caravan to the criterium-style course. It was while caravaning that we were finally given the results of Saturday¹s double stage (nothing like grabbing a wad of stapled paper from car-to-car at 25 miles an hour). |

Phoned-in update from Sean:
Jonathan Baker of Team Kaos takes 2nd place in the Tour of Puerto Rico! Jarred Berger and Chris Brennan should be in the top 20. The general classification isn't done at the time of the call. Sean will provide an update very soon with complete account of today's race. Good job guys!

There is so much to share about today's double stage, I hardly know where to start.
So let's start with the unusual accomodations we had near Hatillo. The barracks-style housing units where we stayed Friday night had no TV, no phone, no toilet paper and no sheets on the beds or pillows. Ivan Dominguez (Health Net, but riding for a composite team here) took one look at the situation and promptly checked into the Holiday Inn. |

Quick update by phone from Sean.
Looks like today is going better than yesterday. Jon Baker placed 2nd in the morning race finishing with the leader Wendy Cruz. Jon should be moving up in the GC. Today there is a second stage and should have more on both races this evening. The next race is a 60k circuit race on a 5k circuit. |

Mayaguez, Puerto Rico – Augusto Sanchez outsprinted fellow Dominican Wendy Cruz to win the second stage of the inaugural Tour of Puerto Rico Friday in Mayaquez. The two were part of a breakaway of seven riders who escaped the field 60 kilometers into the 152 kilometer race that traversed the northern coast of the island. |

Today's report will be short. We have had an awful day. It started with a mixup on the departure site that left our two Colorado riders about 10 miles from the start and the other bikes on the top of our car -- lost with them. |

Day one of racing at the Tour of Puerto Rico was bound to be one full of surprises. After all, this race has thrown us a bunch of curve balls even before anyone left the start line.
First, we didn’t get the start times for the time trial when they were promised (last night). Then, when we did get them, our two Colorado riders weren’t on the start list. And then there was the issue of credentials. We had been promised them from the moment we arrived. Wishful thinking! |

This may be my last report for awhile, as I don't know if I'll have Internet access as regularly away from Marco's sister's house.
Marco and I scouted out the last 40k of Stage 1 (the 100-mile race), as well as the entire 35-mile mountain stage. Suffice it to say that the mountain stage will be tough - treacherous - incredibly hard. It has short, stinger climbs, as well as two long KOM climbs. And the roads are twisty and narrow, making for some very dangerous descents. It was raining when Marco and I drove it today. (We spent five hours in the car driving. UGH!) |

Marco and I are in San Juan. He arrived at 1 p.m., me at 7 p.m.
The weather is hot (upper 80s), with high humidity - very sticky. People drive like maniacs here, so I'll fit right in when I get behind the wheel for the first event.
Tuesday, the majority of the team arrives. Marco and I will attend a meeting at 7 a.m., then we'll scout out the mountain stage of the race. |
