Aug. 25 — Riders from Team Kaos will be aiming for both gold medals and points for the Rider of the Year standings when they line up Saturday for the Nebraska USCF State Championship Time Trial.
Four Team Kaos members lead their respective categories in the Rider of the Year (ROY) standings: Morgan Chaffin (Women I-II-III), Gary Schmidt (Masters 35+), Jordan Brasch (Masters 35+) and Matt Farnham (Juniors 16-18).
Gary Schmidt, Morgan Chaffin and Jordan Brasch (above, left to right) are three of four Team Kaos riders who hold down the lead in the Nebraska Rider of the Year standings entering the fourth of six events. ROY Points are awarded at six events: Lincoln Plating Spring Cycling Classic, Aksarben TT Series #1, Dave Babcook Memorial Stage Race, Capital City Criterium, Cornhusker State Games Stage Race, Saturday’s Nebraska State Championship Time Trial, the Nebraska State Championship Road Race on Sept. 10 and the Elmwood-Murdock Road Race on Sept. 24.
Saturday’s time trial is on a 20.32-mile out-back-and-out course near the Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium. The first rider goes off at 9:31 a.m.
Several other Team Kaos riders are also in contention for the ROY titles. Ian Robertson and Chris Spence are third and fourth, respectively, in the Pro-I-II men’s division. Chad Headlee is fourth in Cat. III and Steven Muhle is second behind teammate Brasch in masters 35+.
Placing within the ROY competition is based on the highest to lowest point totals. Points from all ROY events will be included in a riders point total. If a rider does not compete in an event they are awarded zero points for that event. Points may not be transferred laterally (i.e. from Masters to Cat. 3) and a rider who is upgrading will have 50 percent of their points transferred to the higher category. Chaffin’s upgrade leaves her second in the ROY women's Cat. IV category and in the lead in the women’s I-II-III category. Chaffin has won all three Ak-Sar-Ben time trials this year. Last year, Team Kaos managed only a pair of third place finishes at the state time trial, with Marie Neville (women’s) and Robertson (I-II-III).
