 Raymond, Neb. — Morgan Chaffin, Theresa Blume, Matt Farnham and Gary Schmidt each rode to gold medal performances Saturday at the Sandhills Publishing presented by A to Z Printing Nebraska State Road Race Championships at Branched Oak Lake State Recreation Area.
Chaffin, already the Nebraska State Time Trial and Criterium Champion, made it a clean sweep with her victory in the Women’s Open division. She finished second to Aerospace Engineering’s Tamyra Barnard of Dania Beach, Fla., but earned the state title by virtue of being the highest-placed licensed racer from Nebraska. Blume successfully defended the Women’s Cat. IV title she won a year ago by finishing third overall. Team Kaos teammate Emily Farnham was fourth and the second-best Women’s Cat. IV racer. Matt Farnham added to the Juniors 16-18 state criterium title he won in June by winning the same category Saturday. He, too, was the division’s defending champion. Gary Schmidt also completed a three-for-three sweep of state titles in the Masters 55+ category with his victory Saturday. In the Cat. I-II race, Team Kaos’ Jarred Berger came up just short of sweeping the state titles, finishing second in a three-up sprint to Lincoln Plating-LeMond’s Aaron Poole. Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team’s Alexander Boyd was third. Poole and Berger rode off the front of the field about 25 miles into the 72-mile race and gained an advantage of several minutes. Boyd, Lincoln Plating-LeMond’s Christian Davenport and Berger’s Team Kaos teammate Tim Farnham later tried to bridge the gap, but only Boyd managed to catch the leading two. Berger, Boyd and Poole stayed away to the finish, with Berger leading out the sprint. Poole came around him as Berger made a late acceleration to try and close the gap but it wasn’t enough. Davenport beat Farnham in the sprint for fourth place and Team Kaos’ Joe McWilliams outsprinted LBC/High Gear’s Jay Thomas for sixth. Team Kaos’ Marco Vasquez finished eighth.
