Burlington, Iowa - Chris Spence was well on his way to winning the Snake Alley Criterium for the second straight year.
But with one lap to go, his bicycle suddenly refused to cooperate.
The Team Kaos rider's 10-second lead quickly evaporated, allowing Mercy Cycling Team's Chad Cagle to catch up, pass him, and win the Masters 30+ race Saturday in Burlington, Iowa. Team Kaos' Steve Muhle finished fifth in the same race.
Afterwards, Spence couldn't hide his disappointment.
"It wouldn't kick in my big chain ring at the top of the hill the very last corner," he said. "Chad got the gap and I couldn't catch on. He's tough. He's a strong rider."
In the Cat. IV race, Team Kaos' Tim Farnham finished second to Ryan Jacobsen of Team Atlas.
