Nov. 23 — A representative of Team Kaos will be part of a group designated to help the City of Omaha create a citywide bicycle and pedestrian transportation map and guide.
"We are honored that Marty Shukert invited us to share our expertise in the areas of recreational and competitive cycling," said Team Kaos spokesperson Sean Weide.
Shukert, of RDG Planning and Design, is bringing together a panel of experienced bicyclists who will share the safe routes they use to commute, using both trails and city streets.
Activate Omaha is heading up the effort. It has been awarded a two-year, $53,000 grant to create the map and guide.
An awareness campaign will include presentations to neighborhood and community groups and employees at local businesses, said Tammie Dodge, project manager for Activate Omaha, which is coordinating the effort.
Activate Omaha is a group that aims to encourage active lifestyles. It hopes to turn the city into a bicycle-friendly community. Team Kaos is the Midwest's leading bicycle racing team and club and the annual promoter of the Omaha Race Weekend.
A key part of the effort will be making drivers aware of the rights that bikers have in traffic and making cyclists aware of their responsibilities. As part of the project, the group will identify safe east-west bike and pedestrian routes; most of the city's existing trails run north and south, following area creeks.
