Baldwin City, Kan. – With all three of its riders in the top 10, Team Kaos remains in striking distance of the Cat. I-II-III podium with one stage remaining at the Baldwin City Stage Race.
Team President Marco Vasquez and Tim Farnham are tied for sixth overall, while Chris Spence is eighth. Sunday’s final stage is an 83-mile road race.
The Baldwin City Stage Race is scored on points, not total accumulated time. Points awarded for the road race are slightly more than what was available for Saturday’s time trial and criterium.
In the Women’s Open division, Team Kaos’ Marie Neville finished second in Saturday’s criterium and stands fourth on general classification, just ahead of teammate Morgan Chaffin.
In the Cat. IV women, Emily Farnham of Team Kaos finished fourth in the criterium and seventh in the time trial to sit in fifth place overall.
In the opening 6.2-mile time trial, Vasquez finished third, 35 seconds behind TrekVW-Midwest’s Dallas Burnum. Nick Frey of the Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team was second, 30 seconds behind Burnum. Team Kaos’ Chris Spence was fifth, 40 seconds back, while Farnham was another six seconds behind Spence in seventh place.
But the outstanding efforts in the morning were dashed in the afternoon’s criterium when rain showers turned the narrow course – which featured some rough stretches of bricks – into a treacherous ride. Vasquez and Spence went adrift almost immediately and ended up being lapped twice and once, respectively.
“I wasn’t willing to take any risks,” Vasquez said. “It wasn’t worth it. From the first lap, I was apprehensive.”
Farnham, meanwhile, took a more aggressive approach. Mixing it up with the rest of the field on the five-eighths of a mile course, the Team Kaos rider soon found himself to be the target of Team X and Trek-VW Midwest racers who hadn’t performed nearly as well in the morning time trial.
“All the Kansas guys banded together against me, is what it felt like,” Farnham said. “A Trek or Team X guy would shoot off the front so I’d have to haul my butt up there. Then somebody would go again.”
Farnham, who went on to finish sixth, said the course conditions made an already fast race even more difficult.
“The reason why it was so hard was that half of it was on cobbles, with some really bad brick. You pretty much had to not care about your equipment to make it through fast.”
Said Vasquez: “Tim was an animal out there.”
In the women’s criterium, Neville and Chaffin found themselves having to chase down a two-rider breakaway for the majority of the 50 minutes-plus-three-laps race.
With only a few laps remaining, the catch was successful. Not content to wait around for a field sprint, Neville launched herself off the front several hundred meters out, only to be caught just a few feet from the line by KCOI-Boulevard’s Andi Holste. Chaffin finished fifth.
In the morning time trial, Chaffin finished fourth, 32 seconds behind winner Helene Carabin of B1Rocks. Neville was fifth, 1:14 behind Carabin.
Farnham said Team Kaos is already looking forward to what is always a challenging road race.
“Tomorrow is going to be a much better day,” he said. “The three of us are pretty good at going fast in a straight line.”
