New wins mark highlights 2007 season

Just a year ago, Team Kaos reached its high-water mark with 48 victories for the 2006 campaign.

A year later, Kaos flooded the road with 63 wins in a dominant season that ended with 12 state championships across three events – time trial, road race and criterium.

Sponsored by the Nebraska Medical Center, Team Kaos was on the podium in every Nebraska race, but also made waves in out-of-state and international events, including Chris Spence’s masters overall victory at the Cascade Classic in Bend, Ore., in July, Ian Gray’s fourth-place finish (Pro-I-II) at the Joe Martin Stage Race in Arkansas and the team’s second place finish at the Classic Coquina Dorado in Puerto Rico. Kaos was the top amateur team in attendance.

Several Kaos riders climbed the USA Cycling national rankings as well. Before he upgraded to Cat. 1, Ian Gray was the top-ranked Cat. 2 stage racer in the country. He ended the season ranked third nationally in Cat. 1. Teammate Matt Landen finished atop the Cat. 2 standings, taking over after Gray’s upgrade.

Kaos also scored a pair of Nebraska Rider of the Year titles — Morgan Chafin in Women’s 1/2/3 and Justin Maresh in men’s Cat. 4.

For the sixth year, the team hosted the Dave Babcook Memorial Stage Race in and around Omaha. The road race and time trial were staged at Mount Michael Abbey outside Elkhorn, Neb., while the weekend finished with a criterium in downtown Omaha. Added to the mix this year was a touring ride that took recreational riders to Fort Calhoun and back, as well as a dinner at Upstream Brewery for riders and volunteers after the first two stages.

Team Kaos also continued its record of community service, assisting in a number of events: The Omaha Police Department’s Safe Neighborhood Fair, Nebraska Medical Center’s Life-A-Thon, Spokes-4-Folks and the Omaha Marathon. Additionally, a number of riders will participate in Cranksgiving in November, a ride benefiting the Omaha Food Bank.
