NORFOLK, Neb. -- Chris Spence claimed his fifth win of the season at the Norfolk Classic Road Race on Saturday afternoon. In all, Team Kaos/Nebraska Medical Center claimed seven podium spots and three wins.

Spence's win came in the Pro/1/2 category, when he broke away from teammate Ian Gray. The two took the top two spot, while teammate Matt Landen was fifth.

Also claiming wins were Mark Brackenbury (Masters 45-plus) and Rich Pearson (55-plus).

A day that began with mild temperatures quickly heated up, with riders suffering under the sun in the second half of their races. The hilly Stanton Road Race course, traditionally windy as well, was relatively calm throughout the morning and afternoon. Categories 1 through 4, along with the Masters and Women's Open, rode the 32-mile loop twice. Cat. 5 men, Cat. 4 women and juniors did one circuit before heading to the finish.

In the Cat. 3 race, John Vondracek was second in a sprint finish. Justin Maresh, making his Cat. 3 debut, flatted on the first lap and rode alone for the remainder of the race to finish sixth.

The Masters and Cat. 4 fields were combined, giving the race a strong Kaos presence. Despite a number of attacks from both categories, the lead group stayed together to the finish. Pearson and Brackenbury won their divisions with strong sprints to the line, while Bryan Redemske claimed third in Cat. 4. Sean Kennedy was in the lead group as well, until a broken spoke forced him to stop for a wheel change and left him off the back for an eighth-place finish.

Brandon Fenster finished second on the Cat. 5 race, having been denied of his second victory in a sprint finish. Mark Stursma was 11th in the 5s, Ted Blume was 17th and Lou Andersen was 18th.

In the women's Cat. 4 field, Theresa Blume finished fifth.
