EUGENE, Ore. -- Matt Pavlovich of Team Kaos/Nebraska Medical Center finished eighth in stage one of the Cat. 3 Eugene Celebration stage race on Saturday. 

The Maxon Road Race featured two laps on a course totaling 54 miles. A series of small attacks started the action, and a group of three escaped 10 miles into the race. At one point, the breakaway had a 2-plus-minute lead.

The peloton got the gap down to one minute on the second lap, but it was a disorganized chase.

"I tried to bridge up three times -- twice with a group and once solo," Pavlovich said. "Nothing."

Kai Appleguist (Bike Boys of Boise) won with a 1:02 gap on the field. A 7.5-mile time trial is set for stage two on Sunday.
