EUGENE, Ore. -- Matt Pavlovich of Team Kaos/Nebraska Medical Center finished second in the Stage 2 time trial at the Eugene Celebration Stage Race on Sunday.
Pavlovich covered the seven-mile course in 14 minutes, 39 seconds. Later in the day, Pavlovich finished in the top 10 in the Stage 3 criterium -- official results were not available yet -- and moved into fifth place in the Cat. 3 general classification.
The time trial was held on an out-and-back course that had a
moderate headwind at the start. "I usually try to go from the gun on
these short TT courses, but I had a talk with Bob Gray and Marco
(Vasquez) and they advised otherwise," Pavlovich said.
Instead, Pavlovich took Gray's advice and got into a rhythm before overtaking riders.
"I
rode conservatively for those first few minutes and that helped me keep
an open mind and fresh legs going into the crit and road race,"
Pavlovich said.
The afternoon criterium was on a 1K loop that featured numerous attacks. Pavlovich was marking the GC contenders, so he played it safe and moved when they moved. With two laps left, he tried to bridge to a pair of riders off the front, but the headwind stalled their progress and the peloton came back together for a pack sprint.
The race finishes today (Monday) with a hilly 84-mile road race.
