RAYMOND, Neb. -- Chris Spence of Team Kaos/Nebraska Medical Center soloed for the final 13 miles to win the men's Cat. 1/2/3 state championship on Saturday at Branched Oak Lake northwest of Lincoln.
Spence attacked breakaway partner Nick Ziemet of EVCC/Bike Way on the last of 7 laps around the course. The pair went off the front with two laps remaining. Spence was also in an earlier break that was reeled in. Ziemet went on to finish sixth after being swallowed by the peloton.
Also reaching the top step on Saturday for Team Kaos: Rich Pearson (Masters 55-plus) and Steve Cramer (Cat. 5 55-plus).

Joining Spence in the combined Cat. 1/2/3 field were John Vondracek, who finished fifth after helping to reel in Ziemet, and Joe McWilliams, who fell off the pace and withdrew.
Dave Rogers finished third in the combined 60-mile Masters race, and took second in the 45-plus field. Mark Brackenbury was fourth in the 45-plus division.
Brandon Fenster took third in a sprint finish in the 72-mile Cat. 4 race. Bryan Redemske finished 12th.
The massive Cat. 5 field featured 52 riders and a 49-mile race. Mark Stursma was third in the 35-44 division, followed by Scott Tarry in fifth. In the 45-54 field, Lou Andersen was sixth and Doug Semisch was 10th. Gary Schmidt was third in the 55-plus division.
Saturday's race marked the end of the Nebraska road-racing season. Team Kaos claimed three Nebraska Rider Of the Year titles: Matt Landen in Cat. 1/2, Brackenbury in Masters 45-plus and Redemske in Cat. 4. No other teams won more than one crown.
