HUGO, Colo. -- On a rolling, windy course, Marco Vasquez of Team Kaos/Alegent Health claimed third place in the 35-plus elite field at Saturday's Hugo Road Race. The 78-mile race was covered in just over three hours. When the peloton turned into a crosswind section, the field was quickly guttered and shortly thereafter splintered. Vasquez remained in the lead group the rest of the way, shedding riders a few at a time. With 18 miles left, the five remaining breakaway riders attacked each other, to no avail. A pair of teammates nearly pulled off a bid to steal the win, but their last effort was shut down a mile from the finish. The final kilometer featured 800 meters of downhill punctuated by a 200-meter uphill drag to the finish. "Unfortunately for me, a pure sprinter's delight," Vasquez said. Bob Dahl of Excel Sports took the win. Vasquez topped out at 43 mph in the finishing sprint. Like many other members of Team Kaos, Vasquez will be in action again this weekend. He'll be at the Colorado State Time Trial Championships, while most of the rest of the team will be at the Norfolk Classic on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's race is a rolling, hilly affair on a course south of Stanton, Neb. Sunday's criterium in downtown Norfolk will serve as the Nebraska state championship criterium. Both races are sponsored by Elkhorn Valley Cycling.
