IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Alegent Health Team Kaos’ Justin Maresh took first place at the Old Capital Criterium in downtown Iowa City.

The Cat. 3 racer worked with teammate Vaughn Pierce in the April 25 race, setting the pace, offering a few attacks and then holding back until the right time.

Maresh and Pierce rolled off the start of the 25-lap race in the back of the pack after a late arrival. Maresh worked to get to the fornt of the group about three laps into the race.

During the next eight laps, Maresh said he attacked and bridged gaps to other groups. After reaching one breakaway, Maresh fell back to the middle of the pack to recover.

“And as I did this, I saw Vaughn moving to the front,” Maresh said in a team letter after the race.

Pierce then took over, attacking and bridging to more groups.

Maresh went back to the front, and then attacked on a right turn after a climb. One rider stuck on his wheel for a about a lap, and then dropped off.

“I just decided to go for it and kept the pressure on the pedals.  The remaining laps were like a time trial.  During my time off the front, Vaughn was once again the perfect teammate.  He blocked on the front, and didn't let any attacks get away,” Maresh said.

Pierce stayed in the front for a sixth-place finish.
